KATARINA MONNIER The Spirits in Spring

The French artist Katarina Monnier is known for her harmonious abstract compositions that explore the emotive power of colour to the maximum. She often divides the picture plane into sections with horizontal bands of colour, balanced by vertical textural effect, giving an underlying geometric framework to the composition. Within these divides, Monnier uses harmonic or complementary colours as prescribed by Goethe in his Farberslehre.Vivid hues seem to float and shimmer across the canvases in a veritable “dance of colours”.
Whether the paintings are abstract, expressing purely the light emanating from Nature, or more figurative, they are built up layer upon layer to create intensely luminous images.
