ALEX BEARD "Abstract Naturalism" And "Ionosphere"
21 November - 21 December 2007
The Cat Street Gallery is pleased to present "Abstract Naturalism" and "Ionosphere", an exhibition by Alex Beard and Camie Lyons.
Alex Beard's "Abstract Naturalism" features original drawings and paintings, which draw on the Eastern practices of the calligraphic arts, refers to the Modernists, who crossed the lines between the abstract and the real, borrows the mathematics of M.C. Escher, and expands on Surrealist imaginings. Referring to the process by which he creates the work, Alex says, "The idea is to get out of your own way." All the pieces begin with sweeping gestural strokes and splashes of ink and paint, which Alex develops into the recognizable, yet whimsical, the defined, yet abstract. His art is about motion - the deeper you dig, the more you'll find.
Sculptor Camie Lyons attributes her keen sense of timing, rhythm and line to her dancing background. Her sense of movement is captured and translated into her bronze linear sculptures, through which the artist communicates fleeting moments of balance and beauty created in a world full of frenetic energy. Through "Ionosphere", Lyons embraces the constant movement and emerge that is her world where art and life collide passionately. Her works in the collection are created in bronze, cast sticks and twigs coaxed into lyrical form resulting in textured rings and twists that become like steps in a dance.
