Paul Robinson, an LA photographer, is constantly creating new departures in both his style and technique. Robinson always works with analogue film and his approach can be seen in many ways as a reaction to digital photography and photo shop practices. His latest series, ‘Transparent’ explores the aesthetic possibilities of transparencies, slowly building a layered work and disrupting the drying ink to great visual effect. By manipulating the process of photograph developing, Robinson is in effect creating something more akin to painting and collage.
Robinson’s previous series ‘In Camera’ saw the artist manipulate inside his camera rather than outside, combining subjects in double, triple and quadruple exposure to create an abstract series of painterly images. The effect is varied, sometimes lyrical and mysterious, sometimes bold and striking.
During his junior year at UCLA, Robinson moved to Paris for six months to shoot fashion. The experience not only inspired him to see the world, but also to capture it on film. He had his first exhibition, "Voyeur" in 1995, in New York and Los Angeles. Robinson’s client list and collectors of his work include Sydney Pollack, Renee Zellweger, Graham Norton, Angela Missoni, Vivica A. Fox, Jennifer Tilly, Melissa Etheridge and Jason Priestley. Over the years, Paul's commercial work has been in publications ranging from Detour, Details and Interview, to ad campaigns for Architectural Digest and House and Garden.
