Niesche’s practice interrogates the static nature of the two dimensional image through an investigation into painting and sculpture and their potential hybridized outcomes. Using a combination of glitter, linen, mirror and semi-transparent fabrics and paint with custom designed objects/shapes to tease and stretch the spatial limitations of traditional painting, the works are created to operate as a kind of magical portal of shape shifting possibilities and historical contradictions united in our present. Niesche employs an illusory play of objects and visualizations of deep space combined with references to Minimalism, magic, psychedelia and glam rock. The work is created to act as an ‘experiential exchange’ between the works, the viewer and their environment. In a quasi-performative way the works are activated by the viewer’s presence and movement. As the viewer navigates the work, it is activated by sparkling glittered light, coloured, distorted reflections of the viewer and space. This ‘visual conversation’ is the aesthetic experience of the work.
