ALAN JONES

The Cat Street Gallery is proud to present Album Paintings , a brand new body of works by Australian artist Alan Jones . Best known for his figurative work and self-portraiture, Jones returns to Hong Kong for his first ever solo show bringing this latest series of paintings - a collection of works that draws influence from an old album of family photographs.

Working primarily between painting and sculpture, Jones takes a very personal approach to his subject matter as he explores ideas that surround the notion of identity. Self-portraits and family members are often at the centre of a new work as Jones traces back his family history, communicating the intricacies of human connections and relationships and how his own roots subsequently influence his work.

Throughout his career, Jones has exhibited widely both within Australia and internationally. In 1997 he gained his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the National Art School. Jones has since furthered his education abroad as the recipient of the 1997 Inaugural Pat Corrigan Travelling Art Scholarship and 2004 Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship. In 2008 Jones won the Paddington Art Prize for landscape painting, and in 2010 was acquired by the Kedumba Collection of Contemporary Australian Drawing as a recipient of the Kedumba Drawing Award. In 2011 he won the Fisher’s Ghost Art Award. Most recently Jones was awarded the 2013 Allan Gamble Memorial Art Prize, and was a finalist in the prestigious 2013 Archibald Prize. He is in several public collections including Artbank Australia, Macquarie Group, Maitland Regional Art Gallery and the Gold Coast City Art Gallery.
